SEOUL, April 27 () -- The Japanese government is negotiating with the South Korean government to buy the country's government bonds, the finance ministry said on Friday. The Japanese government is discussing for the first time the purchase of Korean Treasury Bonds (KTBs) with the South Korean government in a bid to diversify Japan's foreign exchange reserves, according to Asahi Simbun newspaper.Asked if the news is true, an official at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance said that "Japan expressed its intention to buy KTBs last year, so we are discussing the basic framework for Japan's KTB purchases." But nothing has been decided yet, he added.Asahi Shimbun reported that the Japanese government planned to officially announce its purchase of South Korean government bonds on May 3.Market watchers saw the planned purchase of KTBs by the Japanese government as a positive signal for the South Korean economy. "This is well reflected by South Korea's enhanced creditworthiness and macroeconomic stability. Moody's recent decision to upgrade South Korea's sovereign rating outlook is also indicative of Korea's lower external risk," said Kwon Young-sun, an economist at Nomura International in Hong Kong.Earlier this month, global credit rating agency Moody's raised its outlook for South Korea's sovereign credit rating "A1" to positive from stable, citing strong fiscal fundamentals, resilient external financing position, reducing external vulnerability in the banking sector and relatively strong economic outlook.
COPENHAGEN, March 2 () -- Denmark will provide financial support for former UN chief Kofi Annan's coming peace mission to Syria, the Danish foreign ministry said on Friday. The country will provide 1.5 million Danish kroner (around 266,400 U.S. dollars) to aid Annan's work in stopping the ongoing violence in Syria, the ministry said in an official statement.Annan has been jointly appointed as the UN and Arab League's envoy to Syria, and is tasked with helping the Middle Eastern nation find a peaceful solution to the conflict there.Danish Foreign Minister Villy Soevndal welcomed Annan's appointment as "good news," but warned that the role would be "extremely difficult," in the statement."Kofi Annan showed a great capacity for political negotiation in his time as UN Secretary General. If anyone can make a difference as an envoy, it is him," Soevndal added.Syria has been wrecked by escalating levels of violence since early 2011, resulting from armed conflict between the Syrian government forces and opposition groups demanding regime change there.
